Clearcuts

Clearcut near Reedsport, 2006

Clearcuts are the Oregon state flower. They bloom everywhere in the forest, year-round, with bright red and yellow logging equipment and stacks of downed trees amid the smell of sawdust and diesel. Some people hate them. Most of those people also live in wood-frame houses. But clearcuts also have a strange and kind of tragic beauty, something like the devastated cities of Europe after World War II.

To find one, head up just about any gravel road in any national forest.
