Pete French Round Barn
This part of the world is somewhat short on landmarks. The Round Barn is distinctive, though, and even though it’s out in the middle of nowhere — what in Harney County isn’t? — it’s worth the drive, if only because you’ll find something at the end of the drive as opposed to nothing.
Built in about 1880, the barn has an unusual circular architecture, which various organizations and people have worked over the years to preserve from the tough weather and local vandals. In 2003, a local rancher opened up a museum near the barn, which means there’s a place to stop and buy postcards.
To get there, drive east from Malheur NWR headquarters and turn right down the road toward Lava Beds.
