Sea Lion Caves
Without a doubt, this is the vilest-smelling tourist attraction in Oregon. The privately owned caves are along U.S. 101 between Florence and Yachats and attract hundreds of Steller sea lions — a mammal bigger than seals — that congregate in the protected caves in fall and winter and can be seen outside the rest of the year. Pay your fee and you can take the elevator down into the 12-story-tall caves, which are open to the ocean and are, let’s just say, pungent with the aroma of sea lion, and a bit noisy, too.
This also might just be the spot on the central coast that’s got the most tourist schlock. We love it. Well worth a stop
