Where to stay in Ashland

Ashland is full of places to stay.

If you’re there to see the plays — and who isn’t? — you’ll want to be an easy walk from the Oregon Shakespeare Festival downtown. Trouble is, in summer that can be expensive and all the rooms may have been booked long ago, especially during opening week in June.

Some of our favorites are:

The Plaza Inn and Suites, right across the creek from downtown. Decent rooms, good exercise center, quiet location. Good off-season prices if you come for the winter openings in February. 98 Central Avenue. (541) 488-8900, (888) 488-0358

Ashland Springs Hotel. Great old elegant historic building on the main drag a block away from the action. Restored rooms, good restaurant. 212 East Main St. (541) 488-1700, (888) 795-4545.

La Quinta Inn & Suites. OK, it’s La Quinta, and it’s not walking distance. But it’s right on I-5 at the ramp on the north end of town, you can park easily, the rooms are fine, there’s a pool, and the rates are reasonably inexpensive. And this one fills up slower, in case you didn’t get around to making downtown reservations in time. 434 Valley View Road. (541) 482-6932, (800) 531-5900.
