Oregon has a
lot of painters. Go back a generation and the Northwest was known, briefly,
for the melancholy group of painters sometimes called the Northwest
mystics: Morris Graves, Kenneth Callahan and others.
These days much
Northwest painting looks a lot like painting from around the country,
but you still find artists here in love with the regional landscape,
taking their cue from the late Nelson Sandgren in Corvallis and David
McCosh of Eugene, both of whom taught for years at the state's two big
universities.
