Charleston

The best place on the Oregon coast to get away from crowds, enjoy amazing scenery and contemplate the Northwest's rugged landscape and soggy weather.

Stay at Captain John's Motel, a cheap hideaway near the Coast Guard station and the waterfront cafes and bars. Visit Shore Acres State Park, a monument to a robber baron fortune of the early 20th century. Eat an early breakfast at the Basin Cafe and listen to the fishermen swap lies. Check out the cafe bulletin board, which listed, on a recent visit, notices about a fishing boat dog that had been kidnapped and a warning about a woman, complete with her photo, who had done her man some serious wrong.
